Carole Vernallis: Experiencing Music Videos

Carole studied editing and camera work in music videos. Carole Vernallis' theory centers around 4 key concepts that all relate to the construction of the music video and they are, Narrative, Editing, Camera Movement and Framing and diegesis.

Some of her theories are:

  • The rules of continuity editing are broken, this is done to draw attention to what is on the screen.
  • A base track is frequently used to give the video structure.
  • The camera moves in time with the music.
  • Edits should be obvious to draw attention to the music videos such as special effects, jump cuts and wipes.
